As mentioned in a previous post Spokeo uses e-mail addresses to find people across the social web. There are other services that can access similar data and they sell the information in the context off marketing research. Many organizations will pay a high price for someone to compile social profiles, one such company that puts together this type of data is RapLeaf.com. Don’t forget the data that they put together is available in the public domain. So how is this data used, If you take a mobile phone manufacturing company for example they might want to know what new model most people are discussing on-line. Rapleaf would simply spider the web using their list of e-mail addresses to obtain the required information.
Now you must remember that all this information was first published by yourself. Going back to the previous post when I mentioned about people searching for an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend which is normally just out of curiosity. However, they may be people that wish to carry out searches for more sinister reasons they may want to search for people that they dislike or even hate and so this creates new element’s of risk. Now as I said all along, these services are not doing anything illegal and if you can understand how the data is compiled then you can control your on-line identity.
So how can you protect yourself and take control of your on-line data? You can start by using the same tools that collect the data to manage your data trails. You can do this simply by asking to have your data permanently deleted from a particular people search engine database. Going back to RapLeaf, they have a open tool that you can use to manage your Internet data. Just by signing up to RapLeaf, you will be able to see all the information that they have about you. Once you have seen this information you can then make the decision to either leave it all remove it. RapLeaf offers an opt-out service and data will never appear in their reports again.
Other ways of protecting your data include making your data private and this is simply done when joining social media services for example Amazon, Myspace and Facebook all have a privacy page/control/settings panel where you can set your profile to private.
So in future instead of just excepting the default parameters when you set-up your user profiles pay more attention and look into the privacy panel and set your profile accordingly. Don’t forget you have the power to protect your data so use it………happy surfing
